Almonara started from a simple observation: many parents in Sabah wanted to talk to their children about money, but weren't sure where or how to begin. Some felt their own financial knowledge was limited; others worried about saying the wrong thing. Most simply hadn't grown up with these conversations at home.
In 2019, a small group of educators and community organisers in Kota Kinabalu came together to create resources that filled this gap. The goal was never to create financial advisors — it was to help parents feel comfortable having honest, age-appropriate conversations about money with their children. The name Almonara, meaning "the lighthouse" in Arabic, reflects that guiding spirit.
Since those first workshops in Jalan Gaya, Almonara has worked with more than 320 families across Sabah. Our team has grown, our materials have been refined through real feedback, and the community around our programmes has become one of our greatest assets.

Raihanah Ahmad
Founder & Lead Facilitator
Former school counsellor turned parent-educator. Raihanah created Almonara's first workshop after noticing how few families talked about money at home.
Daniel Lim
Programme Development
Daniel brings a background in early childhood education and curriculum design. He oversees the age-stage framework behind all Almonara materials.

Community & Outreach
Nurul manages our parents' community groups and ensures every family joining Almonara feels welcomed, heard, and supported throughout their journey.

Content Accuracy
All educational materials are reviewed by our programme development team before delivery. We update resources regularly to reflect current general knowledge in family finance education.
Small Group Sizes
We keep workshop groups intentionally small — typically 8 to 15 parents — so that facilitators can give meaningful attention to each participant's questions and context.
Privacy & Discretion
We understand that conversations about family finances can be personal. All participant information is handled with care and never shared outside of Almonara.
Participant Feedback Loops
Every programme includes a structured feedback stage. Families tell us what worked, what didn't, and what they wish was covered — and we actually use this to improve.
Certificate of Attendance
Participants who complete the Family Milestones Programme receive a certificate of attendance — a small recognition of a meaningful commitment to their family's future.
Locally Rooted
Our team lives and works in Kota Kinabalu. We understand the local context — school fees, festive budgeting, extended family dynamics — and our materials reflect that.
Financial Education That Fits Real Malaysian Family Life
Almonara operates from the understanding that every family's relationship with money is shaped by culture, community, and personal history. In Sabah, that means navigating a rich mix of traditions, varied income circumstances, and a strong sense of communal responsibility. Our programmes are not borrowed from abroad and translated — they are built from conversations with parents right here in Kota Kinabalu.
The families who participate in our workshops are not looking for lectures on economics. They want practical, kind guidance on how to introduce the concept of saving to a six-year-old, how to explain why the family can't buy something right now, or how to encourage a teenager to think about managing their own allowance. These are the real questions Almonara was created to help with.
We work across three core programme areas — introductory workshops, a parents' toolkit and community membership, and a structured multi-session programme for families ready to go deeper. Each builds on general financial education principles and adapts them to the realities of everyday family life in Malaysia. Our facilitators are not financial advisors, and nothing in our programmes constitutes financial advice. We are educators and community builders, committed to making these conversations less daunting and more natural.
